From August 3rd to 7th, the Photon Science Summer School (PSSS) of ShanghaiTech University was successfully held in the main venue and cloud classroom of School of Physical Science and Technology in ShanghaiTech, which is the second Summer School following the first Material Characterization and Scientific Application Based on Large Scientific Devices Summer School in 2019. Due to COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control this year, PSSS was moved from offline to online. The Summer School not only continued as scheduled, but also further expanded the scale of students and enriched the course content through the usage of cloud classroom, as COVID-19 and distancing could not stop the students and teachers for learning. 20 well-known professors from 12 universities or institutions and more than 800 participants gathered at the Cloud classroom of ShanghaiTech University for consecutive five days to experience the lively and thought-provoking lectures and discussions.
Professor Yin Jie, Vice President and Dean of Shanghai University of Science and Technology attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. President Yin reviewed the construction of the Zhangjiang Scientific Equipment Group from 2004 to the present, and pointed out the great significance of Shanghai HIgh repetition rate XFEL aNd Extreme light facility(SHINE) in national science and technology development, presented his high expectations of cultivating students with innovation, and expressed his sincere gratitude to all the professors and course assistants who contributed to the Summer School.
This Summer School invited many distinguished experts, including Academician Yang Xueming, Academician Zhao Zhentang, and Professor Feng Donglai. Over 800 students, mainly graduate students and researchers, come from 160 universities and institutions with research fields focusing material science, physics, optics, life science, chemistry, environmental science and so forth. There are 20 lectures in all, and the course covers various topics such as large scientific installations, accelerators, detection methodology, etc. The lecturers and course assistants jointly brought a comprehensive and detailed lesson to the students. Also, the course concentrates on synchrotron radiation and free electron laser user devices, introduces the performance and characteristics of domestic existing devices and those under construction, and systematically interprets the promotion of large scientific devices in the fields of energy, materials, chemistry, biology and other areas.
PSSS is jointly organized by School of Physical Science and Technology, SHINE project and Academic Affairs Office. It was supported by Information Center and Finance Department.
