Research Interest

Our research focuses on the area of functional organic materials chemistry covering length scales from the atomic up to the macroscopic. Our goal is to discover novel molecular materials with new structures and functions for energy applications. Currently, the ongoing projects include designing new functional materials for capturing and utilizing CO2, and developing stimuli-responsive molecular materials, organic ferroelectric and assemblies for organic energy storage. In addition, we use computational methods to design organic solids with targeted functionality by interpreting and predicting the underlying molecular assembly processes and materials properties. We are also applying an automated high throughput (HT) synthesis and characterisation method for screening large databases of computational designed materials, to identify candidate materials with the potentially optimized properties for any targeted application. Our programme is a unique combination of computation, experiments, and automation to accelerate materials discovery. The interdisciplinary nature of the research activities, coupled with the universal intrinsic properties of these molecular materials, also promises to add value and further scope to synergistically impact many other research disciplines and applications.

Key challenges: Our research programme sets out to address Key Challenges (KCs) that contribute to the overarching limitations of functional molecular materials.

KC1: How to develop new functional molecular materials that are designed via a function-led approach?

KC2: The fundamental importance of understanding the structure-property relationship for better design of targeted materials, especially towards new stimuli-responsive molecular materials for energy applications.

Researcher, Postdoc, and Graduate student positions are available in my group.
